Poverty in the U.S. - 961 Words

According to a 2013 article in the Economist, the US currently boasts the highest post-tax level of income inequality of any high-income country in the world (Economist 2013). The nations Gini Coefficient – a measure of wealth inequality – currently stands at .42, well above that of other nations such as Switzerland and Sweden, which have Gini Coefficients of .31 and .33 respectively. Unfortunately this high level of income and wealth inequality is growing. Between 1979 and 2011, American earners in the top one percent saw wages increase by 113 percent, earners in the 95th percentile saw wages grow 37 percent (Fuller 2014). However, the income growth for the median worker during that same period was a mere six percent. These simple†¦show more content†¦Without adequate health insurance, many families become burdened with healthcare debt, further tightening the shackles of poverty, and making upward mobility almost impossible. The US economy relies heavily on th e middle class, and the lower class, to keep the economy growing, and to create jobs (Reich 2014a). When gains from economic growth disproportionately advantage the top one percent, the purchasing power of rest of society, especially the middle class, is diminished and they struggle to perform their necessary function. This situation disproportionately disadvantages the poor. As largely unskilled and less educated laborers, they are the first to be fired and the last to be hired. They bear the burden of declining wages and benefits. The middle class is also shrinking, and can no longer generate enough tax revenue to provide adequate education, safety nets, and family/social services for themselves and the poor. While wages, job accessibility, educational quality, and social services decline, and while income inequality grows to favor the wealthy, the income ladder gets longer and harder to climb. Upward mobility is increasingly daunting, and the shackles of poverty are growing tight er. Coca Cola And The Consumerist Nation - 1873 Words

Coca-cola and the Consumerist Nation During the early 1900s production in the United States was at an all time high. The increase in production and money available to be spent by fellow Americans led to a consumerism culture. Even though Americans were constantly being bombarded with different advertisements to buy company s products, one company dominated the market place with their great advertising campaigns and by associating its products with everything that made Americans feel good. This is why Coca-Cola the most famous brand on earth contributed to the consumerism culture of the nation and forever changed the way Americans spent their money. Even though Coca-cola was invented in the late 1800s it was not as widely popular to the general public until later in history, this was widely due to advertising. Created by Dr. John S. Pemberton, Coca-Cola at first was only placed in soda fountains making it not as easily available for the whole country to have access to. Dr. Pemberton then sold his brand to many different businessmen who started to advertise the drink more aggressively to Americans. The businessmen hoped to make Coca-Cola the James 2 nations drink and to profit from that image. It was not until the early 1900s when the famous Coca-cola bottle was created and was easily shipped and available throughout the whole country. Soon Coca-Cola plants were spread throughout the nation taking full advantage of American’s willing to spend their money. Integrated Business Experience The Iconic

Question: Describe about the analysis of sales and marketing, analysis of operations and analysis of finance of the Iconic? Answer: Introduction The current report will be focusing on analyzing the condition of The Iconic which is based by it. The assignment will be concentrating on evaluating the present and future strategies in context to sales and marketing, HR, operations, IT and Finance. Therefore, different concepts will be applied that will help in solving the issues of the company. Analysis of Sales and Marketing The Iconic has successfully adopted the online marketing strategy by making an easy navigable website. The homepage of the Iconic shows two major tabs Shop Women and Shop Men giving clear purchasing directions to the visitors. The predictive eye tracking attention map shows that the marketing strategy of Iconic focuses largely on women (Pandey, 2012). The online retailer also provides access to gender specific homepage that the online customers can access on selection of the preferable gender. The specific target oriented selling strategy has helped Iconic to secure rapid sales growth. Moreover, the adoption of direct marketing strategies like creation of mobile responsive website has contributed in making The Iconic the second most successful e commerce site of Australia (Hanafizadeh and Behboudi, 2012). The online retailer increases the sales by featuring the most popular products on the category homepage. For instance on the Shop men section, the retailer features the shoes because they are the commonly demanded products by men. This has helped Iconic to incur sales as much as 70% in each category. The use of the shopping filter within the category links have made it easier for the online customers to find the desired product easily (Ginty, Vaccarello and Leake, 2012). Recommendation Although the online website marketing strategy of The Iconic is successful enough to attract high sales, however the online retailer must consider other marketing strategies as well. It is advisable for Iconic to improve the SEO marketing and improve the content visualization of its website further. The highlighting of the Add to bag button may increase the sales more (Krstic and Becic, 2011). Moreover, media marketing and PR strategies are also necessary for Iconic in order to make the customers aware of the presence of the online retailer. The competition from the traditional retailers like Woolworths, Wesfarmers and traditional clothing companies like Billabong can affect the growth rate of Iconic. Hence, the company to retain its position should include more international fashion brands like Nike, Adidas, Gucci, Zara, Paul Smith, CK etc. The company should make investments in Social marketing through celebrity promotions in order to attract word o mouth marketing. The winter campaign of The Iconic on the social sites like twitter and Face book was able to generate high customer visits on the online website and in the winter collection category. Analysis of Human Resource The company employs human resource manager and customer retention manager separately in order to build separate and innovative marketing strategies (Li, 2013). The number of website visits shows the loyalty rate of the customers and the human resource managers makes use of the rate to devise the strategies effectively. The HR management of the company focuses on high customer interaction and delivery of optimized customer services (Fox, 2012). The HR and the employees within the online retail shop are engaged in daily up gradation of the website content and making changes in the visualization of the products and discount offers. This has helped the constant market growth of the online company. Recommendation The companys major focus is on development of content marketing since the major activity of the company is online based. Hence, the employees working to improve the website visualization and making strategies to develop customer satisfaction are not able to interact with the real market strategies. Hence, the company should focus more on the performance appraisal systems and non-monetary employee benefits like discount cards for online shopping from The Iconic. The company should also arrange for recreational activities for the employees in order to increase their engagement and motivate their thinking skills. Analysis of Operations The Iconic is a well known business which is engaged in supplying fashion accessories and footwear. The company holds top brands such as Academy Brand, Adidas, Converse, Guess, Ben Sherman and many other brands to provide quality and latest goods to the customers (Theiconic.com.au, 2015). On the other hand, it has been understood that there has been decline in their sales which significantly affected the image of the company. Apart from that, the company does not have enough local warehouses and due to that company is not able to increase their service. However, the retail operation of The Iconic is effectively engaged in managing day to day activities in order to increase the profits. Apart from it, there is inventory management complexity which makes tough for the company to acclimatize their business sculpt to e-commerce (Mishra and Ansari, 2013). Recommendations In order to improve the operation, the company will have to establish local warehouse so that large amount of service can be delivered to customers and on time. Moreover, it will help in arranging the fashion products and footwear if there is high demand for it. On the other hand, Just In Time approach will be helpful in arranging the inventory to meet the current demand of customers. Therefore, the customers do not have to wait for the product and it will be effective to increase their sales and profit margin (Corwin and Pope, 2013). Moreover, the cost of inventory management will be minimized and that cost can be used for investing in business growth. Apart from that Lean Six Sigma will be effective in reducing the process cycle times and return on investment will be improved. Analysis of IT The use of information technology is advantage for any business to grow and reach out to large customer circles. Therefore, The Iconic is also making use of online service to market their product. Having being said, the company is facing stiff competition in the online market from other retail houses and due to that the company might lose their market share in online market. Therefore, this would certainly decrease the revenue and earnings (Hossain and El-shafie, 2013). On the other hand, it is known that e-commerce is only able to provide 7% to 8% of total retail majorly from fashion. Thus, it can be understood that company is not able to generate high margin from e-commerce. Apart from that, the company today is not highly banking on the local online retail industry. Recommendations It has been analysed from the IT that The Iconic is doing well in terms of information technology. The Point of Sale System will be helpful in capturing the information at the time and placing sale by utilizing the personal computers which can be connected to bar code readers, optical scanners, cash registers. Apart from that Radio Frequency Identification can be valuable to hold information of individual customer and products can be tracked till its delivery to the customers (Chu, 2013). Moreover, the use of social network will be effective such as Facebook, Twitter, My Space, and Google +, etc. This would help in remaining connected with the large customer base and making them aware about the latest accessories and footwear products. Analysis of Finance It can be analysed from the published report of The Iconic that the company is making less investment in the local online retail industry which may turn against the company to provide quick service to local customers. On the other hand, there has not been done much in context to local warehouse and less investment has been made in this field. Apart from that, it has also be known that company in January 2013, has invested about $25 million in venture capital funds and furthermore $28 million in July 2013. Therefore, it can be accounted that company is making investment in bigger projects but concentrating less on the local market that could help the company in increasing their market share (Smith, 2015). Recommendations In order to become market leader in retail industry sector, the company may need to invest in profitable sections such as local warehouse and local online retail industry. This will be useful in arranging the required branded product by the customers and connecting with the all the local suppliers and customers. Thus, the brand value will increase both in the domestic market as well as in international market. On the other hand, the finance has to be invested on the human capital so that best people can be placed in the stores. Apart from that, financial experts should be hired to help the company in planning the strategy for future and gaining large benefit from the market. Further, the investment can be made in the supply chain so that product can be delivered to customers on right time. Conclusion The report shows that Iconic, which was initially a profitable online retailer, is losing its market share due to the lack of improvements in the marketing strategies, HR developments and IT and finance developments. The recommendations in accordance to the adoption and introduction of various strategies and programs and development of the website content will ensure future success and drive the sales of Iconic. Research paper on Obseity Essay Example

Research paper on Obseity Essay The condition substantially increases the risk for a long list which includes ailments, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cancer and much more. But regardless of the reasons for the rise in obesity, maintaining healthy weight comes down to balancing the number of calories people eat and drink with the number of calories everyone burns through exercise and everyday activities. Every day people can make choices to eat differently, exercise more and enjoy a healthier life if they maintain a healthy diet. In discussions of obesity, one controversial issue has been nutritional information on fast food. On the one hand, David Convince argues that food industries are at fault for not supplying easy to read calorie charts and hazard labels. One the other hand, Raddled Balk contends that everyone needs to take responsibility for what they consume. David Convince claims that food industries are at fault for not supplying easy to read calorie charts and hazard labels by focusing on obesity. However its hard to agree with his statement because some fast food places do show how many calories are in their food items and parents are the ones that are paying for this food for their families to eat. He then goes on to argue that even healthy Items on the menu for fast food restaurants are unhealthy. Drawing on his own experiences as a sasss kid, he describes how easy it is for teenagers to put on weight with a steady diet of fast food meals. Part of the problem he argues, is that nutritional information about fast food is often either unavailable or hard to interpret. For instance, when people go to restaurants and see how many calories they are taking in, it shocks them when they see that even the lately Items may consume many calories as well. However should food companies really be the ones to be blamed? Convince states that the prevalence of fast food and the lack of healthier food alternatives is causing an epidemic of teenage obesity in present day America(392). He argues this because of the consequences for society of increased rates of Type 2 diabetes, which can be associated with obesity. By sating this, he wants to blame the food Industries for not making big enough labels of calorie charts. Blame because people should be the ones to blame due to themselves paying to eat sat food. Yes some places may not have charts saying how many calories are in their items, but sometimes if someone where to look close at the menu, they do state how many calories people are consuming. Instead of buying the fating foods, there are some healthier items that people can buy. Fast food companies shouldnt be the ones to blame due to the fact of people being tempted to want to eat fat food and not healthy foods. Towards the beginning of David Cozinesss article he states one of his own life experiences saying by the age of 15, he packed 212 pounds of torpid teenage tallow n his lanky 5-foot-10 frame(392). When he states this he is applying how there are fast limits to the weight that a certain person can only carry safely. But does he ever realize who are the ones choosing to buy the unhealthy foods? Everyone knows that fast food is bad, but they tend to be lazy and not want to eat a health meal for their own good. People should come to see what is best for their own health to be able to not gain so much weight. David Convince wants to blame fast food companies for peoples obesity, due to them not having hazard labels and big enough calorie charts to read. However, fast food companies shouldnt be the ones to blame for peoples obesity due to the fact of people being the ones who are paying for the food they want to eat. Convince may have made a good point, but his point isnt good enough because he doesnt think about the real consequences of peoples health and how people are choosing what they consume. On the other hand, its easy to agree that what people eat is their responsibility as Balk states because everyone should be aware of the food they consume. People chose what to eat, but instead of eating bad food they can chose eat healthy foods. Balk claims the government needs to take action and stop spending money for anti obesity because it is the wrong way to prevent it. He tells his readers that it is unhealthy for children to be eating bad food but its their choice to eat what they want. Balk says, in other words, bringing the government between you and your waste-line, saying that the government shouldnt be in your business of what you are eating or weather you are obese or not. He states that he doesnt like how the government has so much control over what people are eating and that they are fighting obesity the wrong way. Instead he wants the government to show responsibility. Balk believes that everyone has their own choice of eating foods that are unhealthy and if they get obese or have health problems they should pay for the consequences not the whole nation. Balk states that our government ought to be working to foster a sense of responsibility and ownership of our own health and well-being'(39). Len other words, Balk is saying that if people are eating unhealthy and are having health problems everyone shouldnt have to pay for their health problems. By stating this he believes hat the government should be working to foster a sense of responsibility in ownership of our own health and well-being instead. He wants people to take priority for themselves because it is their own fault of what the consume. I agree with Balbos statement of how people should take responsibility for what they should realize what price they are paying by ending up becoming obese. Some parents can only afford to buy cheap food and what what pops up in their mind is McDonalds, taco bell, and many other places. However when they think about this they can always chose the best healthy item on the menu to consume a better meal or themselves and their family such as eating a salad. Everyone should see how their health isnt right by consuming the right foods. If someone where to gain the weight, they can chose to have a diet in the end which will make them be able to live longer. Towards the end up Balbos article he states, Well all make better choices about diet, exercise, and personal health when someone else isnt paying the consequences of those choices (398). I believe this is true. People that arent covered under their parents insurance make sure that stay health by getting plenty of exercise to not gain he weight. However, when people are still living under their parents, they tend to eat what ever they want and become lazy, which makes them gain weight. So for people to stay health they need to be aware of all of their actions of what they chose to In conclusion, then as I suggested earlier, defenders of fast food companies cant have it both ways. People can chose what they want to eat and it should be their responsibility and not about the companies who make the food for people. Their assertion that they should take responsibility is contradicted by their claim that what hey consume is their choice but they should be aware of what can happen to them if they keep eating unhealthy. Increasing anxiety over the question of how to properly nourish ourselves has generated some serious responses. Michael Pollen has argued the need for a clear- eyed focus on an empirical phenomenon to get us to past our preoccupation with scientific theories of nutritionists. For Pollen, the problem that is not itself in doubt is the western diet. As Michael Pollen puts it the western diet is what people are eating right now that live in the western hemisphere such as fast food, chicken, pizza, fruit etc. People eat by this type of diet because its easy: its easier to buy an already made meal and Just heat it up rather then cooking that meal from the stuff people have at home. Pollen suggests that we should simply avoid any food that has been processed to such an extent that it is more the product of industry than of nature (438). He states how people eating a western diet are prone to a complex of chronic diseases that seldom strike people eating a more traditional diet. With these chronic diseases people dont know where their food is coming from and who makes it (Fresh). The animals that companies use to make food, can be very dangerous due to how farmers put a certain chemical in the fields, and that can cause the animal to die or end up having some type of disease. Pollen states in a interview, people who cook their own food are more healthy cause they dont use processed foods (How cooking can change your life). Everyone should see how to maintain a healthy diet by not eating fating foods. Pollens prescription is simply for people to stop eating a western diet. To differentiate his specific prescriptions from those of nutritionists, Pollen propose the ales eat food, not to much, mostly plants. By urging us to once again eat food, he challenges the prevailing nutrient-by-nutrient approach, what he calls nutritionist and proposes an alternative way of eating that is informed by the traditions and ecology of real, well-grown, unprocessed food. Our personal health, he argues, cannot be divorced from the health of the food chains which we are part. When Michael Pollen says Eat Food, what he means is, eat real food, as in food that is unprocessed and doesnt come from a factory(Adamson). With this being said our rains think why we need to cook, however its to maintain ourselves to eat healthy and not maintain Junk food all the time (How cooking can change your life). Everyone can eat the foods that they want, but instead of making the best choice, make the better choice. Next, Pollen says not to eat to much food meaning that he doesnt want people to be overeating. When everyone eats to many simple carbohydrates, they get a blood sugar spike, and then a blood sugar crash, and the result is that people are hungry again, even though they Just ate (Adamson). While eating everyone needs to maintain certain amount of each item that they wont necessary be overeating. Lastly, Michael Pollen brings up his last point which is to eat mostly plants, meaning to eat more vegetables, fruit, and whole grain, which will not make people gain as much weight. While some people may only Just eat plants, Pollen is Just saying that the plant-diet is the best diet. Plant foods are the richest, most bountiful souses of vitamins and minerals as well as fiber. They contain hundreds of thousands of photochemical, and many of these contain disease-fighting properties that a laboratory cant duplicate (Adamson). When people tend to eat like this they will maintain a diet that they will never regret. Pollens theory of eat food, not to much, mostly plants is extremely useful because it sheds light on the difficult problem of obesity. His point is very clear to his readers of how he wants people to see what the best way to eat is. Everyone should be responsible for their actions of what they maintain and I agree with how Pollen said that the best way to eat is to be making home made meals. When people tend to buy frozen items from a local grocery store they are consuming processed foods, which is ad in my opinion because that is how people start becoming obese. By everyone eating more vegetables and fruits such as Pollens point mostly plants they will see a change within their health that they will never regret. Mary Maximize views Pollens recommendations as, ultimately, that of another expert who writes from a cultural bias. Maximize argues that our cultures bias is seen in the way that it incorrectly connects the following three things diet, health and weight. Maximize brings up these points when she says, likewise, even after noting that the connections between diet and health that we take as gospel apparently arent(442). She says this to prove how Michael Pollen doesnt have great resources of his information about how his way of eating is the best way of maintaining a healthy diet. The way people are eating causes them to have heart disease, diabetes, and cancer and according to this line of thought, each of these maladies is tied to our diet and essentially to our weight. When Mary Maximize brings up diet weight and health she says that our to make them gain weight because while everyone is growing up they learn about the foods that are in their culture and they tend to always want to eat it over and over gain, due to that being with how they were raised. However, some people may have never learned to eat in the right way that maintains a healthy diet for themselves. Which brings up her point of when Pollen kept saying that processed foods make people sick and fat. As everyone is learning about different foods they tend to want to maintain the bad foods and not the better foods, which is why Maximize wants to bring up her point of what she thinks is the best way to eat to help people not become obese. For Maximize, our views of fatness and thinness have been skewed by culture. Not only do we reject scientific findings, we favor, according to Maximize, a perceptive that considers fatness fatal and thinness immortal. The consequences of this perceptive for the way we live, Maximize shows, are serious. When Maximize states this point she is saying while it is true that an individual can be fat and healthy, It does not follow that that individual is healthy because their diet consists of Twenties, soda and Junk food. At any state someone can be healthy, but they are at more risk with their health depending on weight. One of the risks being diabetes when people are ever-weight. The key to Maxillas claim is healthy eating, being active and living a healthy lifestyle. To counter the way that we have inadvertently memorized food, Maximize proposes a form of mindfulness Ere recommendation is that we hold onto a long known but recently forgotten formal which is trust yourself, trust your body, and meet your needs. When Mary Maximize says to trust yourself, she is telling her readers that people need to trust themselves that they arent eating to much food that will make them gain so much weight, meaning anyone can eat what they want. Next she says to trust your body meaning that people nee d to believe that what they eat wont cause any harm to their body as well as letting people know that they shouldnt worry about their weight. Lastly, she states her third point which is meet your needs. When she says this, she is telling readers that everyone should know what they can eat to maintain a good diet for themselves and that everyone should feel comfortable with their body. When people follow Mary Mansfield guidelines they should know that they can trust themselves to meet their standards and that they an eat what they want, as long as they know how to maintain it. Maxillas formula does not contrast with the recommendations of Pollen due to the fact of what they both think is the best guidelines to follow to maintain people from becoming obese. Pollen bases his off of what people should eat and Maxillas guidelines have more to do with people Just trusting their instincts. Both of their guidelines may work for different people, however adults need to see which guidelines will end up benefiting to their own needs that will make their health better. Many people do not realize how damaging obesity can be to the body and for their overall health, such as when Convince blames fast food companies for people being fat.

Forensics essays

Forensics essays Forensic science is the study of finding, identifying and interpreting the clues and evidence that criminals leave behind at the crime scene. These clues are everything from tire marks in the dirt to an eyelash left on a carpet. Many people are involved in forensic science. Police, detectives, doctors and witnesses are required to investigate the crime. Many forms of scientific equipment are needed in the lab to examine the evidence. Without forensics many of our criminals would still be running free committing more crimes. Evidence is the key factor in solving a crime so as much evidence as possible should be collected. It must be collected with care as not to ruin what is left. Evidence can be anything from an eyelash to a pool of blood left at the crime scene. Detectives use many types of equipment to collect evidence. Before the detectives can rearrange the crime scene they must take photographs which will be developed at the lab later. Fingerprints are one of the most common types of evidence taken. To collect a fingerprint, detectives dust where they believe a fingerprint will be left, such as a doorhandle, they then place an adhesive sheet of plastic that will collect the fingerprint. These adhesive plastic sheets will also be used to collect fibres from a carpet and suspects clothing. The evidence that is collected at the crime scene is taken back to the lab to be tested. For that evidence to be tested the lab must have state of the art equipment. The most common used equipment is electron microscopes. These are used to magnify tiny evidence so that its cells, fibres or whatever is in the specimen can be seen up close so it can be compared with other evidence. A more complex machine used in the lab is a spectrometer. A spectrometer is used to determine what chemicals are present in the unknown substance. Sometimes the simplest things are used as equipment, such as lemon juice because of its acid and ...

How to Speak English As a Native Speaker

How to Speak English As a Native Speaker When you learn to speak English as a second language, it often seems that no matter how hard you study or how much you practice you still don’t get it quite right! There is a simple reason for this – the way we learn to speak English in an academic setting is not how native speakers actually talk! There are subtle nuances such as accent, vocabulary and grammar which make a world of difference between a native English speaker and someone who has learned English as a second language. However, there are a few helpful tricks that you can use if you want to know how to speak English fluently if you are not a native speaker! Why Put The Effort Into Perfecting Your English Before we get started with learning how to speak English fluently if you are not a native speaker let’s talk about why it is worth making the effort. For some people, knowing that you can speak the language well is enough, so why put in more time trying to sound like you have always spoken English? There are a number of benefits that come from being fluent in English. Native speakers will find it easier to understand you. If you use the same colloquialisms and accent as the local people it is going to make it much easier for them to understand you and there will be less likelihood of misunderstandings. You will feel more confident at work. If you need to speak English in a professional environment you will feel more confident if you know that you sound just like a native speaker. Get access to additional job opportunities. While we are on the topic of work, there are many jobs which require native-level English, so if you are able to master this skill you will find a whole new set of opportunities open to you. Often these jobs pay a little more too! How to Speak English Fluently If You Are Not a Native Speaker Now that we know some of the reasons why you might want to become as fluent as a native speaker, let’s get into how to achieve your goal. There are a number of great tips and tricks that you can use in your quest for how to speak English fluently if you are not a native speaker. #1: Familiarize Yourself with a Variety of English Accents There are so many different variations of English all over the world. In America, if you listen to a native New Yorker and someone from Texas they will sound completely different! In fact, you could be forgiven for thinking that they are speaking a different language! In the United Kingdom, the most well know accent is known as ‘Queen’s English’, but in reality, few native speakers actually sound like that! If you want to sound like a native English speaker you are going to need to choose an accent to work on! Listen to as many English accents as you can and think about what one is going to be more suitable. You probably won’t want to choose one of the extremes, instead opt for something neutral. Think about where you are likely to work or travel to narrow down your options. #2: Imitate Native Pronunciation Once you have chosen the accent that you prefer the next step in learning how to speak English fluently if you are not a native speaker is mastering native pronunciation. Start by watching videos and television programs featuring native English speakers. This will not only allow you to listen and mimic the pronunciation, but you can also study the mouth and lip movements of the speakers since this can also impact your pronunciation. Look on YouTube for videos which teach the lip and tongue positions for every letter and sound combination in the English language and practice in front of a mirror. We need to be honest here – this is a long and tedious process! However, it will be worth it! You need to practice repeatedly until it become muscle memory. Pay attention to sounds that don’t exist in your native tongue! #3: Use Slang Phrases When Speaking English Slang is the name given to informal words and phrases also known as colloquialisms. Native English speakers will use slang in speech, but not usually when writing. The type of slang used is going to vary by area, so think back to when choosing your accent – which area is it from? You will want to learn slang that matches your chosen accent. There are some types of slang that are universal and will be used in any area, others are more localized. Here are a few examples of common slang phrases that are quite universal: â€Å"Do you wanna hang out?† – Means ‘do you want to spend time together?’ â€Å"We had a blast at the carnival!† – Means ‘we had a great time at the carnival’ These are phrases you would not learn from formal language lessons, but rather from listening to how native speakers talk to one another. If you can master using slang you will immediately sound more like a native English speaker! #4: Learn How to Use Idioms As well as slang phrases, when listening to native English speakers you will also hear them use idioms. These are funny little phrases that probably don’t much sense to a non-native speaker. Some examples of commonly used idioms would be things like ‘in the blink of an eye’ meaning very fast or ‘it’s a piece of cake’ meaning its easy! These phrases should not be taken literally and like slang it takes learning the phrases and their meanings. It can be a good idea to keep a list of these in a notebook, so you can memorize them. Using idioms will make you sound much more natural and more like a native English speaker. These tips will help you to learn how to speak English fluently if you are not a native speaker. You should first learn the language and then apply these tricks to master an appropriate accent, pronunciation and use of informal language to make your speech blend in with native speakers.

Condrey and Perry (2010), Armstrong (2010) and Lyster and Arthur (2007) express that the process should be based on job performance as it motivates the employees to work hard. Communication is one of the key features of an effective appraisal system as noted by DeIpo (2007), Armstrong and Applebaum (2003) and Armstrong (2009). Armstrong (2010) further reinforced on the significance of communication in this process. Employee participation is vital in the process as it shows their worth and impact in the business operations as stated by DeIpo (2007), Foot and Hook (2005) and Marquis and Huston (2008). The employee performance evaluation should be conducted in a fair and transparent manner as asserted by Marquis and Huston (2008), DeIpo (2007) and Condrey and Perry (2010). Analysis and Discussion SCG is an insurance company that conducts an annual performance appraisal of its employees. Ingrid Aspwell recently joined the company as a finance manager and is... The intention of this study is SCG as an insurance company that conducts an annual performance appraisal of its employees. Ingrid Aspwell recently joined the company as a finance manager and is making preparations to do her first performance appraisal. She has taken the necessary measures before the procedure by communicating to the staff members. This is by use of a standard performance appraisal form to be completed before the review meeting and a document containing the date and time of the process as expressed by Condrey and Perry. One of the longest serving employees in the department has received the documentation and is not pleased with the idea of the formal meeting. He had an excellent working relationship with the previous manager and his performance was outstanding as reflected in yearly salary increments. He considers himself as more than competent and has worked well in the previous years. He does not understand the purpose of the company’s strategy and targets fo r the following year and fails to understand how they relate to his job. The manager fears that other employees share the same sentiments as she overheard their discussion. These opinions held by employees worried her as they would have a negative impact on the performance appraisal process. The previous system lacked the features of effective performance appraisal. The new manager, on the other hand, introduced a system where the activities of the employees were governed by a system based on management’s objectives as explained by Armstrong and Applebaum.

Decisions in Paradise Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Decisions in Paradise Paper - Essay Example Issues Kava is an island located in the South Pacific. The country has certain social problems due to the fact that the region has a very diverse ethnic and cultural background. Diversity can lead to problems of segmentation between the populations. Another issue with the population of Kava is that the age composition is extremely low. In Kava over 50% of the population is under the age of 15. For business a population with such a low median age is bad because minors are not a part of the labor force of a nation. There are health concerns within the population of Kava. The country has been hit hard by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. If a lot of the employees are infected with the HIV virus this could have a negative impact on the company because the insurance costs are going to be high. Another issue with the population of Kava is that a large portion is indigenous. Indigenous cultures tend to have lower levels of formal education in comparison with urban cultures. A major business risk of do ing business in Kava is that the region is susceptible to multiple natural disasters scenarios including earthquakes, tsunamis, tornados, floods, fires, volcanic eruptions, and hurricanes. The Kava territory is also susceptible to terrorist threats from internal and external sources. Problem Statement Kava is a country that has had troubles attracting foreign investment due to the underdevelopment of the region and the high risk of natural disasters. There is nothing the people of Kava can do about the inherent business risk that nature poses to companies that penetrate this marketplace. Environmental Analysis Doing business in Kava is a high risk proposition for Starbucks Cafe. The country is susceptible to many kinds of natural disasters. To offset the risk of this proposition the company can invest in insurance, but the premiums are going to be high. Despite the country’s susceptibility to natural disasters the country has valuable strategic agricultural crops for Starbuck s Cafe including coffee and cocoa. Due to the high unemployment and necessity of the region Kava would be a perfect location to implement a fair trade coffee plantation. Stakeholders Perspective There are numerous stakeholders that must be considered in any expansion plan into Kava. As a company investing in a foreign market the firm must act in the best interest of the shareholders. The shareholders of Starbucks Cafe expect expansion projects to generate a profit. To accept the project its net present value (NPV) must be higher than cero (Besley & Brigham, 2000). A second stakeholder group that must be considered is the government of Kava. The government of Kava is looking for ways to decrease the unemployment rate and increase its tax revenues. The only way for the government to achieve those goals is by attracting foreign investment. A third stakeholders group that has to be considered is the population of Kava. There are a lot of children living in Kava. Employing the adult popu lation will enable the parents to be able to provide food, medicine, and shelter to the innocent children. A large portion of the population of Kava is composed of indigenous people. Protecting their unique culture and identity is important. The diversity of the population

Love vs. Lust in Andrew Marvells Poem, To His Coy Mistress Essay

I know that there is a unique difference between love and lust. In the Andrew Marvell poem â€Å"To His Coy Mistress,† I would argue over the issue of love versus lust. In this poem, we are introduced to a man who is infatuated with a young woman and wants to become intimate with her. He tries to pursue this young woman, but the woman is playfully hesitant. The man is trying to explain to the young woman if she keeps being resistant to him, they would never get a chance become intimate. Could it be that the man really does have true love for the young woman? Or is that he is just lusting for her gentle touch? In the first stanza of this poem, the man begins by expressing his feelings for the young woman. He starts off by trying to flatter the young woman. He does this by telling her that if he had all the time in the world, he would use it by telling her how beautiful she was. Since he knows that they do not have all the time in the world, he uses his charm and persuasion to try to get her to become intimate with him. In my opinion, at this point of the poem, it seems as if the man has...

Forum Discussion Activities Essay

Please post your response to ONE of the following questions in the Forum by Wednesday, midnight, of Week 3. Then please post at least three responses to other student’s postings by Saturday, midnight, of Week 3. * You are the Vice President of a US based software company. You have been tasked with exploring the possibility of setting up a software development operation in India. You have heard that the rigid caste systems can affect business operations. Do you think it is possible to use a typical US management style in India or should you adjust to the local Indian managerial style and employment practices? Explain. Forum Discussion Week 3 – Question #2 Businesses create strategies for setting up relationships with other countries based upon the type of product involved and whether their entry is in the product market or the resource market. â€Å"Strategy† within this global framework most closely resembles a ‘marketing strategy’ that addresses target markets, segmentation, positioning and allocation of resources. Discuss the various strategies outlined within the text reading and which one or two seem to fit your final project country and product best. Provide a glimpse of your final paper by discussing the product and country you have selected and post and respond to students related to what product you have chosen and whether you are entering in the product or resource markets. Written Assignments Case Study 2 Write a 2-3 page analysis of the Case Study entitled, â€Å"Argentina’s Monetary Crisis† located in Chapter 10 of the text. Upload the paper to the Assignments Drop Box by Saturday, midnight, of Week 3. Course Project: Market Entry Analysis You should have by selected your country and product and begun your environmental research. A learning objective this week is to move from environment to strategy. Outlining your country and product choice, begin a thread on the Forum related to entry strategies as outlined in the text. Elicit comments from your classmates on your choices and begin to formulate your strategy. Learning from this milestone can be incorporated into the final paper due Week 5. * You are the Vice President of a pharmaceutical company that makes anti-malarial drugs. You are looking at the possibility of opening up a factory as a JV with the local government in an African country with high levels of malaria. At present, the majority of people in this country cannot afford the high prices of anti-malarial drugs from outside the country, but by building the plant locally, you would not only provide jobs but also your company could supply anti-malarial drugs to the local population at half the current price. In a meeting with a local government official, you are told that the plant can go forward if you pay the official $100,000 in cash. What are your options and what would you do? My options are to pay the $100,000 or not to pay it based on the company policy. Facilitation payments are still permitted by some countries. We would give the $100,000 to the officials in cash, and then we would also try to negotiate a 5 year tax break. And to recover the $100,000 given to officials, we would charge an extra 15 cents per vaccine sold to recoup the $100,000. We would say the fund is just the price of doing business and setting up relationships outside the US. This bribery is similar to what some city inspectors do when they want to give you a hard time. There has been times where if you didn’t have a nice hot cup of coffee with a $100 bill under it that the inspector would fail you just so you would have to pay another $250 for another inspection. The $100,000 that we would pay as a company could negotiate a vast amount of things per the article below. Interestingly, when the FCPA was initially passed in 1977, the facilitating payment exception was found under the definition of foreign official. However, with the 1988 Amendments, a more explicit exception was written into the statute making it clear that the anti-bribery provisions â€Å"shall not apply to any facilitating or expediting payment to a foreign official, political party, or party official the purpose of which is to expedite or to secure the performance of a routine governmental action . . .† The statute itself provided a list of examples of facilitation payments in the definition of routine governmental actions. It included the following: * Obtaining permits, licenses, or other official documents; * Processing governmental papers such as visas and work orders; * Providing police protection, mail services, scheduling inspections; * Providing utilities, cargo handling; or * Actions of a similar nature. http://tfoxlaw.wordpress.com/tag/facilitation-payments/ You are the Vice President of a US based software company. You have been tasked with exploring the possibility of setting up a software development operation in India. You have heard that the rigid caste systems can affect business operations. Do you think it is possible to use a typical US management style in India or should you adjust to the local Indian managerial style and employment practices? Explain. I would say yes I would use a typical US management style in India. I agree that adapting to India’s culture, managerial style and employment practices are great and would probably be best. But for the very same reason we are expanding aboard and going to India is because our business model has already been accepted by the culture. You only expand to markets if they are the right fit for the company. Bringing something new, innovative and showing India the way that our US company does business may just be intriguing to the country and accepted in ways never seen before; the only thing that matter is if the product sells. McDonalds is a great example; McDonalds is everywhere and consumers shop with McDonalds because the golden arches are known globally, and the business model is a cookie cutter from store to store, nothing changes. Understanding how cultural differences can affect the way in which a business is practiced, Employing local citizens, mixing managerial staff ,educating ourselves about the culture are great and must do’s, but keeping the company’s business model intact and adjusting to the environment is the key to protecting ourselves from the danger of being ill-informed. Business and money are both universal languages and there are more ways to make it work within a proven system than not. Businesses create strategies for setting up relationships with other countries based upon the type of product involved and whether their entry is in the product market or the resource market. â€Å"Strategy† within this global framework most closely resembles a ‘marketing strategy’ that addresses target markets, segmentation, positioning and allocation of resources. Discuss the various strategies outlined within the text reading and which one or two seem to fit your final project country and product best. Provide a glimpse of your final paper by discussing the product and country you have selected and post and respond to students My product selection is infection prevention, innovative sterilization, disinfection and hand hygiene products that will be sold in Canada. * The â€Å"International Strategy† I think would work the best for my product. Medical products and medical technical equipment accounts for $8.8 billion in US export revenue which is ranked number 6 on the list of top exports to Canada from the US. Infection prevention, innovative sterilization, disinfection and hand hygiene products are produced in the US but, are needed worldwide. Currently the US is the major exporter Medical products, medical technical equipment to Canada; also Leading US pharmaceutical companies have production, R&D facilities, and distribution offices in many locations across Canada. Among them are Abbott Point-of-Care, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Novartis, and others. The medical devices industry in Canada is also among the largest in the world. Medical device companies operating in Canada incorporate advanced technologies and the newest discoveries. Our main focus is on helping to ensure the safest possible environments for patients and their families, healthcare workers, providers and communities. Our quality infection prevention products help care for both the people and the world we live in. * The Global Standardization stratedgy is great because the pro that will be sold are all relatively standard, and will be distributed the same way. Customization is not needed to the products themselves, the only thing that will need adjustments is the language, all sterilization equipment, solutions, and products are manufactured the same and have the same technology. http://www.jnj.com/connect/about-jnj/company-structure/medical-devices/ http://www.aspjj.com/us/about/asp-mission-vision http://www.jnj.com/connect/about-jnj/company-structure/medical-devices/ http://www.worldsrichestcountries.com/top_us_exports.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnson_%26_Johnson http://www.canadafaq.ca/what+are+the+top+industries+in+canada/ I am selling a pacemaker in Australia. The â€Å"International Strategy† would be the best for my product. It is produced in the US currently and does not need customization to sell in Australia. Pacemakers fulfill a universal need. Australia imports 85-90% of medical devices. Currently the US is the major exporter of medical supplies to Australia followed by Germany, Japan and the EU. There is no pressure to reduce costs. A strategic alliance may be needed down the road if a strong competitor does start to emerge. It is important that the pacemaker evolves over time or competitors will develop a better product. â€Å"Global Standardization† may be an option because customization of the pacemaker is not needed. It is a universal product. Costs will be low. Aggressive pricing can be used. The drawback is a competitor may create a better product through evolution. â€Å"Localization† would not work because customization is not needed. Consumer tastes and preferences do not come into play for this product. â€Å"Transnational† is also not needed at this time because cost is not a factor and customization for local demands do not exist. This is a complex strategy that I will not need to apply. Because of local culture, I will need to find a local agent to work with in Australia. The aging population, demands for a higher quality of life and increasing affluence have created a demand for quality medical devices. Reference: Global Business Today My project is to import car care and weather resistant equipment into Canada. This is not a new idea and it is not a product that cannot be found really anywhere in the world. The strategy that seems to fit my project best is the international strategy. The reason is that it is not unique in idea. The vital importance is expanding the market for the product. There will be minimal change to the product and with the non existent trade barriers of NAFTA importation will go smoothly. Since the majority of the Canadian population lives so close to the US borer transportation costs will not extend far beyond deliveries to the NorthEast/NorthWest. The other option would be a Localization strategy as we could focus on specific markets such and alternative transportation vehicles equipment that are used in the snowbound areas. The Localization strategy is the most important in the marketing aspect. The localization and transnational strategies are the best matches for my proposed product which is a UK-based channel on YouTube that is mostly ran from the United States. My product is based on my current occupation and we have several international channels that have launched with steady success. There are four major international business strategies: globalization, transnational, international, and localization. Globalization strategy occurs when a firm focuses on profit by utilizing economies of scale, localization, and learning efforts. This strategy is the most helpful when firms are pressured to reduce costs and local responsiveness is low. International strategy occurs when a firm creates value by selling products internationally that were created domestically and do not require significant customization. Transnational strategy occurs when a firm tries to achieve lower costs by economies of scale, localization, and learning efforts and also focusing on products that are tailored to local markets. Economies of scale and learning efforts will not be factors within my strategy, however localization plays a large role. Because some of the content on the channel will be created in the UK to create a sense of community, creative contractors will create the content which lends itself to a more identifiable relationship with consumers. Expanding a content-based business from the United States to the UK benefits best from concise localization strategy. Content that is tailored for a consumer in the UK adheres to high local responsibility. Because both countries are English-speaking, content can be shared by both venues and avoid translation costs or and also reduce cost of creating content. This may help alleviate the localization strategy’s characteristic struggle to lower the high pressure for cost reductions. References: Hill, C. W. (2011). Global Business Today (7th Edition ed.). New York, NY, USA: McGraw-Hill. I am selling a pacemaker in Australia.
